How Long Does Bruising Last After Lip Filler?

Lip filler is a great way to enhance your lips’ natural beauty and feel empowered by your appearance. However, for new patients, many questions come up about side effects, especially regarding bruising after the procedure. At Urban Aesthetics, we believe all our patients deserve to be fully educated and confident going into the process–which is why we’re explaining the effects of lip filler and the duration of bruising in today’s post.

Understanding Lip Filler and Bruising

If you didn’t already know, lip fillers are typically composed of hyaluronic acid, which gets injected into the lips to add volume, definition, and symmetry. As a non-surgical cosmetic procedure, lip filler is celebrated for its quick results and minimal downtime. However, it’s important for patients who are new to lip filler to know that bruising is a common side effect.

To give you some context, bruising occurs as a result of tiny blood vessels being disturbed during the injection process. While this is a temporary and very normal side effect, it’s best to mentally prepare and expect some bruising. (And while we hope you feel free to live your everyday life as you please, we know some individuals may feel more self-conscious and want to lie low for a few days.)

Let’s talk about the timeline for healing post-procedure:

How Long Does Bruising Last?

The good news is that the duration of bruising is typically short-lived. In most cases, bruising will be present anywhere between a few days to two weeks. The initial swelling and bruising are most pronounced within the first 24 to 48 hours after treatment before gradually subsiding as your body  begins to accept the filler and heal.

Though we won’t be able to predict perfectly, talk to your experienced medical professional about what your individual healing process may look like. The extent and duration of bruising varies from person to person, depending on factors like skin sensitivity, filler brand, and injection technique.

Minimizing the Bruising

There are practical ways to minimize bruising and swelling! We recommend applying ice packs and avoiding certain medications such as aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the days leading up to and following your procedure. At Urban Aesthetics, our team will discuss these precautions in more detail at your consultation appointment (and remind you again at your procedure!).

Speaking of consultations, if you have any questions or concerns about bruising–or the procedure in general–don’t be afraid to ask a qualified medical professional! Our team at Urban Aesthetics offers extensive experience and expertise in administering lip fillers and are very happy to have in-depth conversations about the procedure. During your consultation, we’ll make sure to go over the process, discuss your expected results, and provide personalized advice to minimize potential side effects.

Ultimately, if you’re interested in lip filler, we hope bruising won’t deter you from considering the procedure. Bruising is a common side effect that only lasts a few days for some and up to a few weeks for others. Once it goes away, you’ll be left with the lips of your dreams!
